Glastonbury Abbey

Glastonbury Abbey was founded in the 7th century as a monastery, extending into the 10th. Sadly it became victim to a major fire in 1184, with rebuiding continuing into the 14th century. In 1539 they were stripped of their lands, along with their silver and gold, due to the 1536 Dissolution of the Monasteries. By the 18th century, due to private ownership and removal of many stones, they were declared a ruin. Having said that, there are some charming ruins and structures for you to view, set in some rather pretty and relaxing grounds. Worth a visit, especially is you didn't make it up the tor.
